Your checklist to moving home.
Moving into a new rental home can be exciting, but also overwhelming. Between packing boxes and organising your move, it is easy to overlook one of the most important parts of setting up your new life: your bills.
As a renter, you are likely responsible for a range of utilities and services, but what is included can vary depending on your tenancy agreement. This checklist will help you get on top of your bills from day one so you can settle in with confidence.
1. Check What Is Included in Your Rent
Before signing up for anything, take a close look at your tenancy agreement or ask your landlord or letting agent directly. Some rental properties include certain bills in the rent, particularly in shared housing or when renting from a private landlord.
Bills that are sometimes included:
Water
Internet
Council Tax (less common)
Heating (particularly in studios or homes with central systems)
2. Utilities Checklist: What You Will Likely Need to Set Up
If the bills are not included, you will be responsible for setting up and paying for the following:
Electricity and Gas
Contact the existing supplier to register your name and provide an opening meter reading
Use a comparison site to shop around for better tariffs
Some properties only have electricity and no gas
Water and Sewerage
Usually handled by a regional water provider
You cannot switch water suppliers, but you do need to register and provide your move-in date
Council Tax
Payable to your local council
Discounts may apply for single occupants or students
Notify your local council of your move as soon as possible
3. Internet and TV
Broadband
If the property does not come with internet, you will need to choose a provider
Consider speed, contract length and cost
Installation can take up to two weeks, so plan ahead
TV Licence
Required if you watch live television or use BBC iPlayer
One licence per household, including shared homes
Getting your bills sorted early is one of the most effective ways to make moving home smoother. Check what is included, contact suppliers as soon as you move in and keep a list of what you are responsible for. A little planning goes a long way towards a stress-free start in your new home.
